  1. if you have a camcorder with a firewire port.. make  sure its connected well... make sure you camera is on.. and is set on playback mode.... connect firewire to pc... and camera.. if you are using usb.. that may be your problem.. usb is primarily used.. if it has an expandable usb slot for pictures... get a wirewire cable.. and a firewire pci adapter for you computer if it supports it...

If your camera is a minidv camcorder, Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.

  3. In order to import your video into your computer, you must have a capture device in the computer...I've wrote  a guide with lots of tips on doing that, do check it out
