turn on a self-propelled craftsmen lawn mower? I pumped it up a few times and tried turning the key, but the engine does not turn on, it revs a few times but never fully starts. Do I need to pull the cord? The gas is full and so is the oil. It's a new mower so I don't think anything is wrong with it.

  1. If the mower is new, it is very possible that the battery is low, in which case you will need to pull the cord. Make sure that you have primed it by pushing the little red bubble (if it has one) at least the number of times that it says in the instructions. If it does not have a priming bubble then you will need to pull the cord a few times in order to prime the motor. If it is a walk behind mower you must be sure that the safety handle is engaged. This is a narrow rod under the regular push handle and the mower will not start or stay running if you do not have it pulled up to the handle. Also, to start make sure the mower is set to its highest speed and that you have set to full choke. Once it does start, if it runs rough you will need to adjust the choke till it runs smoothly and then adjust the engine speed. If all else fails, return it to Sears and ask for a model that isn't so complicated. Good Luck.

  2. I am assuming you have some kind of electric start mower. First, check to see if there is a valve between the gas tank and the carberator and that it is open. Once that is eliminated. Take off the air filter, give it a shot of starting fluid into the carberator and try to start. If it fires up, even momentarily, your ignition system is operating and you should look for a fuel problem; such as a carberator problem, old, or contaminated gas, or some other fuel related issue. If it won't even kick over on starting fluid, it is probably an ignition system problem. Check for a fouled spark plug, defective wiring or switch which is grounding out the ignition system (on-off switch). Also, some mowers have one or more safety switches which won't let it start unless you are holding something down or sitting on the seat (if a ride on).

  3. when it starts take off the choke
