I am trying to retrieve my wedding ring how do i get to the trap for the bathtub that is in the basement?

Have you tried a grapple tool it has 3 or 4 fingers that reach out of a flexible cable when you squeeze the handle.Try auto parts stores or tool store.Other wise sounds like the tub would have to come out.Possibly  cut a hole in the skirt or adjoining wall.

yes, it's the U-shaped piece of pipe connecting the vertical tub drain to the horizontal drain pipe. should be a compression nut on either end of it which you just unscrew.

This would be below the tub, and if there is no ceiling in the basement below the tub, this would be the best place to access it from.

There will be some water in the trap so have a bowl or bucket handy to catch the water as you remove the trap.

REmove the drain cover, put an old nylon sock over the end of a vac hose with a long end to it, Use a shop vac.

I've heard a treble fishing hook could be used to snatch such items.  Might not be able to get to trap.

If the tub is in the basement you may have to :  A remove the tub or B find a piece of wire that you can use to reach into the trap and hook the ring and pull it out with.  This is why i like having traps that are easily acessable.
