  1. What is the model number of your receiver ?

  2. Using HDMI with your receiver will only act as a pass-thru - that is, the receiver does nothing with the HDMI signal, it just passes it to your TV.

So, if you still want surround sound from your receiver (and who doesn't?) you still need to run a separate optical audio cable from the 360 to the receiver.  The optical audio connector is only found on the HD-AV connector for the 360, or on the special audio cable break-out connector that is sold with the Microsoft brand 360 HDMI cable kit.  Note - this is NOT the same as the component-to-HDMI converter cable!

But from your question, it sounds like you have everything hooked up properly - HDMI cable from the 360 to the receiver's HDMI (INPUT) port, HDMI cable from the receiver's (OUTPUT) port to your TV.  Set the TV to use that input, and everything should work...

Anyways, let's see about debugging your problem.

Do you have another HDMI device in the house, like an upscaling DVD player, blu-ray player or PS3?  If so, try connecting that through the receiver with the same cables and setup.  If that all works fine, then chances are your 360 has a bad HDMI port.  Exchange the 360 or call Microsoft to get it fixed.

If that doesn't work, then either the cable(s) or the HDMI ports somewhere are faulty.  Try connecting something directly to the TV with a HDMI cable.  If that works, try the other cable - you may just have a defective cable.  If both cables work, then it looks like your receiver's HDMI ports aren't working properly.  This isn't a big deal per se - as I said, connecting the HDMI cable to your receiver is sort of a waste of time, although it can make your configuration slightly easier to use.

If connecting things directly to the TV doesn't work, try a different TV.  It might be your TV's HDMI ports that are broken.
