  1. do you have microsoft picture manager? it can shrink your picture so small and even easier than microsoft paint.

  2. Well, first off, is the picture saved as a JPEG or as a BMP or other format.  Find the file you are using and right click on it.  This brings up a list of items, click properties.  On the first page it should tell you this answer next to file type at the top.

JPEGs (aka JPGs) are much, much smaller than BMPs and some other picture file types, yet are the same resolution (size) and clarity.  If you have this as some other file type, first save your picture (in MS Paint) as a JPEG by clicking "save as" and changing the file type at the bottom of the save box.  This should be a dramatic first step in the file size.

If still too big, then I would suggest changing the strech/skew a little bit.  You claim that your picture is only about 20kb larger than you need it.  Doing a stretch of maybe 90% both horizontally and vertically (so shrinking down 10%) will shrink your resolution only a little and should be about the size you need.

But really, if you got it down to 22kb and it still opens exactly the same, i'd keep it.  I tsounds like you changed from BMP to JPEG.

  3. It depends on several variables, like what is shown on the original pic. I prefer the freeware IrfanView and managed to resize my avatar to 1,4 kb! And it is still viewable, right? In case you want to try it: download and install IrfanView, it has many useful features, yet is extremely easy to handle. Once it is installed, open your pic with it, go to "image" in the top bar, click "change size", enter the desired size, also change the DPI (dots per inch) settings to 72, then save your pic as .jpg or .gif. By doing so, you still have the original pic and the copy with changed dimensions too.
