On Sunday he will be 3 yr old. He does not know any of his colors. Today i spent 1 hr with him trying to get him to recognize brown! He still does not know. This color then i tried orange. Still nothing. I was telling his mother that he is too young yet. What do you think?

  1. How are you trying to teach him?  The best way to teach him is just in normal converstation.  "Oh Look at the Brown dog."  "Would you like a red apple?"   "Which color of crayon do you want -  yellow or red?"

    Try this with clothes too.

"Do you want to wear the yellow shirt or the blue shirt?"

Do this at a young age as early as 1 or younger?

However, spending an hour on one color will not work.  You have to make it fun.

Watch the Dora and Deigo movies with him.  Talk to him about the colors on the screen or pick one where they are learning colors.  Point out that Dora is wearing orange shorts.  Say things like " I like Dora's orange shorts.  Don't you?"

When you and his mom read books to him, do the same thing.  Point to the item and identify the color and item.

He will get it. It won't be overnight.

Sometimes kids this age will call everything their favorite color.  When you ask them what color it is they always say "Blue".  Make it a game - "No, it's red silly" Say it in a fun way.

Make a game out of it while picking up toys.  "Can you bring

    me a blue block"

Keep working on it.  But don't spend hours on one color.  He will get it.

  2. My daughter has known all of her colors for well over a year now and she just turned 3.

  3. First of all relax. Often times it takes boys longer to learn colors. My daughter knew most by age 2, my son is just three and was able to tell me red, blue and yellow today...but then I showed him green and he said red.

I have an almost 4yo boy in my daycare that can barely identify colors...I would say he is late...but this is not abnormal, like I said, especially for boys.

The other posters who mention teaching him during everyday conversation (I like your blue shirt.) are correct. This is a non-threatening way to make a child aware of colors.

Also, it is easier for a child developmentally to identify something by pointing to it, rather than by identifying it verbally. What I mean, is if you put down three color flashcards, and ask him to "find the blue" this would be easier for him than showing him the blue flashcard and asking "what color is this." Cognitively he may know several colors by sight already...but cannot verbally express that.

Hope this helps...and remember, he will learn them. He is still young, and has time...be patient, be encouraging and be positive!

Blessings to you and your nephew!

  4. My daughter is 3 1/2 and at her physical, the dr. asked if she knew her colors, so they should know it if they are verbal at everything else at this time.

    1) Don't try to teach it.  Use it in everyday conversation.  That's how children first learn .  For ex., "I like that blue jacket you have on.  It looks like the color of your eyes."

    2)  Read books and talk about colors, but you don't have to quiz him.  Just work it into the conversation.

Also, talk to the dr. about color-blindness and any other concerns.

Above all, kids should have fun learning!

  5. I think hes a little too young still... you can keep working with him for sure theres no harm in trying but dont get to upset with him if he dosent get it! good luck!

  6. use your enviroment you live in to teach him like for instance  the black couch  can you give me the blue cup while pointing

you outside in a car stop light is red  know its green  go to the store  look at the yellow banana teach him like that

  7. By 3 years old he should start recognizing colors - just try a little bit longer - it is a strange concept to learn for the first time, it takes patience and repetition.  Check out the link on 3 year old milestones.

  8. he never too young 4 anything .jst let him watch a show called naggin on tv here in delawear its comcast 169 but i dont know where u live ?ma lil sis is 2 if i should tell u the things she can do  boy u would get chills.let him watch that 4 a while  and he will be good.always have alot of colourful toys and books around him, dont 4get to give him alot is omega3 which is good for his mind(fish-salmon) and milk strong bones and teeth, nice skin dont let him eat candy really bad then my friend ur good to go.peace out!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                  love mandy

  9. find color songs

try blue and yellow ..........   then red and green (maybe colorblind?)          orange purple brown black white.

its not a one hour thing.. its five minutes everyday or three times a day for up to two months type of thing

five year olds only have a five minute attention span.... the last 45 minutes that  you spent were pretty much not worth your time.     a three year old might be able to last 3 minutes repeating          show 2-3 colors and intro them all and keep going back to the same things

red ball        blue car    yellow bus    brown chocolate     whatever

  10. The best way for children to learn is through paly and through what interests them. If he's not interested in color specific books right now, that's fine. Find something he is interested in. Anything will work, from blocks to cars to puzzles to Dora. When he's playing, join in. Then insert something like "Hey, did you know this color is blue?" For a bit point out colors and name them yourself. Then start asking him to name the color... "do you know what color this is? What color is it?"

Some concepts take longer to learn than others... but sometimes learning can be less of a struggle if they are having fun doing it. Incorporate learning colors into your everyday play and he'll surprise you before you know it! `

  11. just buy him some color board books...you know like a brown boot and it says brown and just shows a brown boot...yellow duck, black cat. i work in the childrens section of a library and people constantly take out those books and i bought some for my own nephew. as for being 3 i am not sure if he'll understand it but it should help. theyre fairly cheap too.

  12. Try with couloured toys or blocks and reward him upon a right answer and encourage with incorrect answers. Coloured lollies may work, but not too many.

Like my young cousin, he may be colourblind. If he cannot distiguish especially red and green this is highly possible.

There are colour blindeness test available online, but these usually require the participant to know his numbers as the show a red number on a green backround and vice versa. If yuo suspect this may be the problem consult an opthamologist.

  13. Sometimes it is best to go with the child's interests. Dora and Diego are brightly colored. You can talk about Dora's orange shorts and ask if anything matches Dora's shorts. You can comment that those are orange, too. If you use colors in conversation, your nephew will eventually pick it up. Maybe you could bounce a blue ball on the gray porch or look for white clouds in the light blue sky. Make learning a part of life, and your nephew probably won't argue. It is a great thing that you are so involved!

  14. work on one color at a time.  throwing too many in will confuse him.  find a lot of things that are one color and make it a game, after he gets that color then do the same with another.  after a while he should be able to tell the difference.  CHILDREN LEARN THROUGH PLAY...so play lots of games and have lots of hands on activities for him to do.

  15. Go thru magazines and pick out things that have alike colors cut them out and paste them on paper, maybe he will learn by seeing things that are all alike

  16. 3, thats way young man!!! i was 3265 when i lerned mine.  ok u no whast, their is just no talking 2 u.  if ur going 32 treat me like this, im leaving, we will see who gets custidy, heres a hint ME, OH YA and the house is in both of hour naims ok charles?  was it werth it just to spend 12 minutes with a wet spoonge.  ya thats wut i thought ok if u need me i will be at my mothers but dont even bothar calling byw

  17. Repetition and rewards for right answer his fav sweet or better a fruitlike lychee destoned or mango slices or dried fruit bits

  18. maybe he is too young, or maybe it isn't interesting/fun for him to learn right now.

  19. i say dont even worry about it.

Children progress at differant rates to others. He will pick it up when he is ready.

  20. Test him on the more basic, primary colors red, blue, and yellow.

  21. I think orange and brown are similar and if he can't tell the difference he may be color-blind.

You can take him in for testing on this or wait longer in life.

Do reds and blues and see what happens.

  22. i took my 5 year old down for eye testing and they told me he was color blind and i ask the question of what made him color blind and they told me that one in every 3 boys was color blind and dident even realize it so to be safe i would have his eyes tested also my son dose see primary colors but dont see light blue or a pink he sees pink as red and light blue as blue so this could be his problem  you can actually test him your self they have books for this check your local libarary  the book will conain color dots that are all one color but the light colors will show a picture of a dog or cat and if they cant see the cat picture they are color blind i have to take my son back a year from now and have him tested again   , if you  dont think this is the problem try playing i spy with useing colors with him

  23. okay

    leave him alone

i m sure he will be able to learn all those things in school

    to be honest, you should

maybe he is colorblind  or  he cann't see the black and white.

    i dont know

to the point   you should tell him that play color games.

  24. Pick something he does want to learn and go back to colors in a few months time.

  25. Use toys or yummy treats when explaining the colours. Hopefully he will get interested and want to learn. Hope that hepls.

  26. This is a tough question, mostly because it depends on the child. Today I substituted in a 2 year old classroom at a daycare. Surprisingly all (7 of em) knew barnyard animals and the noises they make along with most of the colors. (pigs are pink, cows are shown as black and white, etc.) So i dont think 3 is too young at all. I would start out by helping him recognise the color of his room, or favorite blanket, toy and so forth. This will help him remember the colors since he is around those things most of the time. The big crayons are helpful as well, color with one a day then add on each day, make sure and go over the others colors first to make sure he remembers them. Work on it for 15 minutes, then do something else and come back to it, thats the best way to make sure he retains the information. Hope this helps! this was my first answer i did... =)

  27. I taught my kids with grass is green, banana is yellow etc

  28. I think it depends on the child.  He should be able to reckognize the different colors and be able to repeat them if he can comprehend other things he's taught.

  29. Rhyme the words with related colors such as "Boo" blue, scare him. As in "Ready" (tickle him) red etc... but don't frighten him as in "scary" scarlet!

  30. Lots of males are colorblind.
