  1. Previous answer is a very good idea, the post office is a great place to start. I would write rather than phone. Allihies is indeed a tiny place, but it used to be much more populated - lots of emigration in the 1800s, especially to Montana apparently! There is a Beara Historical Society that might be of interest, you could also write a letter to the local paper, the Southern Star (http://www.southernstar.ie/), giving details - lots of people do that. The Southern Star often has historical articles about the Beara area, check who writes them - they would be a very useful person to get in touch with.

  2. I can tell you that it's a very small place, just a few hundred people, so everyone knows everyone else.

You could look for the local post office, you can probably find the number or address (but 'Post Office, Allihies village, Beara Peninsula, County Cork' will probably be okay) and either phone or write to the Post Master there - in these small places they know everyone. To find the telephone number, try www.goldenpages.ie and look for An Post (that's Irish for 'the Postal Service') and see how you get on.
