Question:

I am trying to wean my 9 month old (7 months adjusted) from breastfeeding.

He takes a bottle of formula during the day without a problem and is eating solids for 2 meals. The problem is at night and before naps, he has been conditioned to fall asleep at the breast. He refuses to nap for me and putting him to sleep at night is impossible unless he is at the breast. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not believe in the "cry it out" method, so please do not suggest.

I was planning on breastfeeding for a few more months, but I am pregnant with my second and starting medication.

  1. You have my sympathy.  I have breastfeed and weaned three children.  My last son was the hardest.  I thought it would never happen.  And I did try letting him cry which was hard on everyone, especially me.  What we had to do was change the families bed time routine.  Dad will probably be the one to break this habit.  That's what actually made us successful. Dad became the one to put my son to bed and get up during the night when he cried. They developed their own little routine and I'm sure they both appreciates the extra bonding time.

  2. Congratulations!!!!

Can his daddy put him to bed?

If not, maybe if you position the bottle close to your breast and hold him in the same position, with your top off or something he'll go to sleep that way.

    Good luck!

  3. You may not need to stop for medication (and most definitely not for pregnancy) -- if your doctor has told you that the medication you are talking is not compatible with breastfeeding then it's worth either getting a second opinion or contacting a certified lactation consultant to ask.

Or ask to be prescribed an alternative medication.

Take a look at this list and see if you can't find the medication you've been prescribed and how compatible it is with breastfeeding -  http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/aap-...
