  1. I would ask the apt manager if electricity is included in rent. If it isn't and the electricity is on already, the apartment management probably lives it on so they can show people the apartment. You have to notify the electric company and let them know that you live there now so they can but it in your name. But the apartment manager should be able to provide you with the information that you need.

Good luck! congratulations on your first apt. :)

  2. I live in Indianapolis, IN.  Usually, in an apartment complex here, the electricity is not turned off between tenants.  As a new tenant, you are expected to call your power company and arrange for the bill to be put in your name.  If you do not, I am sure that the complex will put the bill in the name on the lease.  Hopefully, you will not have to pay a "deposit" which is about $250.00 or more.  If you have never had service in your name, or have a good record of paying, you do not have to pay a deposit.  Good luck!

  3. The power company often leaves the power active for a couple weeks, in anticipation of the new customer. You just have the call them and say, "as of July 10 the power should be out into my name."

  4. You still have to put the power bill in YOUR name. A lot of times, the power company doesn't disconnect the power to the apartment, so that it can be cleaned in the interim between occupants. In all likelihood, the electricity is NOT included in your rent. You need to contact your power company and set up the bill in your name.

If you DON'T put the electricity in your name, you'll come home in a few days to a dark apartment.

When you signed your lease, you should have been given a list of contacts for phone service, electrical service, and any other utilities you have to pay for.

I have lived in three different apartments in the past 18 years and have never lived in one that included electricity in the rent.
