I was going to call a 1-866 number to contact my bank and it said "we're sorry that number is unavailable, try again" or something along those lines. So i tried another toll free number to see what would happen and i got the same response.. its not the number. Whats wrong? this is from my land line by the way

  1. There are at least 3 possibilities here:

1 - You do not have long distance calling associated with your PSTN phone service.  I have a few family members who have had their long distance direct dialling service disabled, by choice.

2 - The 1-866 number is not toll free access from your calling area.  That is not uncommon.  Some "toll-free" numbers are "regional" and only free in certain geographic areas, and thus "not available" from other areas.

3 - There is a call routing technical problem with your telephone long distance carrier.  It is possible your local carrier and their peer carriers is not routing your 1-866 call correctly due to technical difficulties.  In which case, call your PSTN telephone company, or whoever you have your long distance phone calling service with and discuss the problem and ask them to fix it.

This happened to me with one of my VoIP services.  I could call 1-800 numbers but not 1-866.  I filed a complaint with the customer service dept.  They investigated and informed me that they confirmed my problem and discovered that it was a call routing problem with one of their long distance routing carriers.  The problem was fixed within 24 hours and I no longer have this problem with that service provider.

  2. have you enabled toll free dialing with your phone company?
