bean plants grow up and around the canes in a anticlock wise direction, dont ask why they just do. so if they start to uncurl just rewind anticlockwise. you dont need to tie them, be careful cos if you break them, they have to start to regrow from the bottom of the plant...

Are you using dowels - no I don't think you have to tie them, according to the source listed & I quote:

"As the bean vines mature, they will grow up the stake."
