  1. In bittorrent content is transferred by the users, like yourself, and so all clients upload as well as download.

uTorrent, and other clients, are set up so that the more you upload, the more you will receive back in download from other peers.  However, if upload is set too high, or unlimited, then needed communications will not be able to get through.

The general rule is to cap upload in uTorrent at 80% of your internet connection's upload capacity.  This guide to getting thhe best speeds in uTorrent should help:

  2. you can limit the upload speed by setting global limits in the preferences under "connection -> global bandwidth limiting"

or you can right click the torrent and select "bandwidth allocation -> set upload limit"

Be wary with the global limit. If you set it below about 6k/s it will kill your ability to download.

You will need to experiment with it to get it to an optimum upload/download ratio. If you set the upload rate too low the download speed will drop right off.

Im assuming you're posting this question because you have dialup?  As 10k/s upload is going to make no difference whatsoever to the bandwith in a broadband connection and will not affect download speed.
