  1. If your diet is good you shouldn't need any.

    If you do want to take some you are best taking those sourced from foods rather than non foods as these are better absorbed and also more likely to have co-vitamins which are now thought to be needed in order for the vitamins to be effective.

    No multivitamin on the market will have a sufficiently high level of the vitamin to cause mega doses. Unless you enjoy eating things like polar bears liver you should be safe from poisoning.

    If you are planning pregnancy avoid vitamin A. You do not have to take a mega dose of this to cause Foetal abnormalities. You should be able to source a multi vit without vitamin A but a good supply of vitamin B.

    The human body can safely manufacture correct doses of Vitamin A from vitamin B. in order to eat dangerous amounts of Vitamin be you'd have to consume an amount of beta carotene vegetable virtually impossible to eat.

    It is possible to megadose from supplements.

You probably do not need any vitamins at all.  If you have been a vegetarian for a few months or more and your weight is stable and are reasonably healthy (not constantly getting colds, having small infections that don't heal quickly, etc) you are fine.  Just remember to eat as many colors of food each day that you can.

    If you still want a multivitamin than the best one is the cheapest you can find and sold in any major chain store.  They are more likely to have some sort of quality control, there is a better chance the contents will meet what the label claims.  In the smaller, specialty health shops you are likely to just be ripped off.

  4. they are all a complete waste of money and in fact, can be dangerous as you may end up getting too much of a certain vitamin making your liver and kidneys have to work harder.  The simple thing is to eat a balanced diet - your body will absorb vitamins much better through their natural sources.

    It's an urban myth (propogated by the meat trade) that you don't get all the nutrients you need from a veggie diet.

    Just look to India. Over 100 million vegetarian hindus and none of them take vitamin supplements. They have one of the longest life expectancies in the world!

  8. I agree with the guys above, stay away from multivitamins. My boyfriend used to take them and when he went for a full check-up he was told that unless he stopped he would damage his liver. There's absolutely no need for you to take any sort of vitamin, your diet is the healthiest possible. The only thing 'good' meat contains is protein, but you can find protein in so many other foods, like cheese, soya (make sure the soya has no artificial colour added in order to look 'meaty', this is carcinogenic), nuts, almonds etc (all of these), and in some fruit and vegetables. Check University reports and the nutrition values of vegetables and you'll see you're on perfect balance!

    PS. No need to take iron tablets either, I have low-blood pressure myself and I eat all the right foods to stay fit and healthy.

I would stay away from pills as they are too hard on your body.  While a balanced diet will help you get most of what your body needs, unfortunately there will still be a shortfall because the foods we eat, especially fruits and vegetable, don't contain the nutrients they did decades ago.  Fruit especially is grown quickly focusing on a large harvest of good looking food.  But it is picked before it is ripe and as a result never reaches peak nutrient value and therefore is virtually useless in our diets.  I recently heard this stat:  In 1950, 100% of the RDA for vitamin A could be obtained by eating 2 peaches.  In 1990, it took 52 peaches to provide 100% of the RDA for vitamin A.  If this is even close to being accurate it is really scary!

    About 11 months ago I came across this product and it has made a significant difference for me.  It is a whole food and helps to provide everything my body needs for good health; essential phytonutrients, fatty acids and antioxidants.  It comes in a liquid form so the absorption rate is really high and won't damage your liver and kidney's the way pills do.
