I am very happy to be at Benfica, says Axel Witsel – Portuguese Primeira Liga News
Belgian star, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Axel-Witsel-c7029, recently completed a move to Benfica from Standard Liege after a long and protracted transfer saga. Once having fully joined the team, he was full of praise for his new surroundings and expressed his delight of playing in a different
setup.
Witsel rose to prominence after impressing with Standard Liege in the Belgian Pro League following a stellar 2007/2008 season. His performances attracted attention from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea but he favoured a switch to Benfica despite
interest from the English giants.
The defensive midfielder will add some much needed class to the centre of the pitch at Estadio da Luz and has stated that while he was an automatic first choice at Standard, he will not be seeing game time until he fights for his place in squad.
"It is true that i was a star in the Standard Liege but I'm not surprised that I have competition at Benfica. I knew before coming that was going to have much competition, that's good in a group like this, no one can relax and we have to remain ever vigilant
and committed to be at the highest level. I will work hard to earn my place in the team,” the Belgian International was quoted as saying.
The 22-year-old has also lavished praise on the Eagles by saying that the club is much more professional than those in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Belgium-c2850 and said the quality of football being played is also vastly superior to that in his native country.
‘I am very happy to be at Benfica. I knew it was a great club and I have found it true. It has a team with great players; it's very, very professional. The level is higher, more professional, nothing seems to fail,” Witsel claimed.
Despite being touted as one of the brightest talents in Europe and bearing the burden of his nation on his shoulders, Witsel’s abilities are still relatively untested at the highest echelons and Benfica might have taken on a gamble by signing the youngster.
But if the track record is anything to go by, he is destined for greatness in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
