  1. Look at www.freebmd.org. You may be able to get them online at the Registrar General's website www.gro.gov.uk.gro/content if you can trace references on freebmd.

Otherwise you may have to go to where they are born, although I can't do that in Cornwall any more. Postal applications have to be made to Truro, to where all the registers have been sent by the local registry offices.

On free bmd, you should be able to trace entries from before the end WW1. After that it's hit and miss, with nothing very recent.

  2. The wording of your question suggest that you are in U K.  If in the U S the county or parish clerk can provide the certified copy of the certificate in question.  Also the State Bureau of Vital Statistics in the state where the event occurred can provide the copy. If in the UK I do not know.

  3. If you know the volume and page numbers, then you can go to the General Register Office's (GRO) website at http://gro.gov.uk and use their online ordering service. They hold birth, marriage and death certificates centrally for the whole of England. You don't even need to leave the house.

You will need to enter their first name, surname, quarter in which they were born, the volume and page numbers (found on the indexes), and a few more details, but these details should be found on the indexes.

You will need to create an account to log in, but it doesnt' take more than a few minutes, and they don't ever send you spam emails, so there's nothig to worry about.

The certificates can take up to 2 weeks to come through, but your local registry office will take the same amount of time too.

  4. all you need to do is phone the registras office at place of birth ask the question and send your payment via check or other means they will then send you a copr

  5. The court house records in the state and county of their birth.

You will have an adventure.  Frequently old courthouse records were victims of fires, floods, storms and other disasters.

  6. I'm in the UK.

All the Certificates I have, I've purchased on-line from GRO and they usually take about a week to arrive in the post. Not cheap but practical when travelling to the Registry office is not an option.
