Not sure what the regulations are as regards putting a lock on my suitcase.

  1. The lock must be a special TSA approved lock (which TSA agents have a master key so they can remove your lock and check inside). If you have any other lock on the back it will be broken off.


  2. The first answer is correct and there are "TSA approved" locks.  However, airport security has a nasty habit of cutting the locks on suitcases even if the locks are the "approved" type.

    You are better off securing your suitcase with a plastic cable-tie, the twist-tie from a bread bag, or even some string.

  3. It is better just to not put one on. I think if you get an approved lock you can but; it causes a hassle because security has to open your suitcase and check to make sure nothing prohibited is in it. In regards to carry-ons, I don't believe it is allowed. Hope this helps!
