Quite honestly, only YOU can answer that question about what you need.  What will you be using the camcorder for?  Where are you playing it back?  Is it for indoor use?  Outdoor?  Day?  Night?  How important is video quality?  Computer connectivity?  Still images?

And the biggie: what's your budget?

Camcorders are ALL made for particular needs.  You may have purposes that make certain features unnecessary for you, but I might find those same features essential, and can't live without them!

Think of it this way: if you "do not need" a feature, why would manufacturers even bother spending the time, money, and effort to include that feature?  The reason why is that somebody out there somewhere does need that feature.

There's one feature that I don't think anyone needs, though: digital zoom!  That's just the camera "guessing" at how a zoomed image would look, which makes for grainy, bad-looking video.  Compare optical zoom instead.

Other than that, just about any feature can be necessary for certain people.

spend $6, buy a  one-month online subscription to consumer reports and research camcorders there. Lots of information and they tell you the pluses and minuses of the various types.
