  1. LOL - It's only an effing bike.

  2. Merida owns 49% of Specialized bike company and shares some frames and designs in the higher end part of the market

Google "Specialized Merida bicycles" and read the articles for yourself.

Merida is the 900 pound gorillla behind the scenes.

  3. It looks like a decent bike ^_^:

  4. You have nothing to worry about. They make good bikes for many big name brands.

Merida is the second largest builder of bicycles in the world.Second only to Giant.

They are much better known in Europe and Asia. Very popular in the mountain bike scene. http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech/2008/pro...

Generally speaking, low to mid level bikes are made in China and mid to high level bikes are made in Taiwan. (Merida are Taiwan)

Have a read of this link it will tell you a lot about where bikes are made. (Merida appears several times on this page but not as a brand.)

I am consistantly amazed at the numbers of people (particularly Americians) that have never heard of them. I have never been one to hang much weight on brand names, but at around $700 Merida are going to be very competitive on value and quality.

For the record I don't deal any brand of bicycle.

  5. Calm down, the name on the bike doesn't mean nearly as much as what components make up the bike.  Some bike companies just buy frames and components and put them together and give them a name, like the brand ''performance''.  Other brands make the frame only, and buy the components.

What determines if the bike is good is the quality of the frame and the components it has on it.  What I mean by components is the deraillers, shifters, cranks, breaks etc...  Shimano makes some really good ones, but there are other companies too.  The problem with bike buying is that its easy to want to spend all the extra cash on name brand, but all it comes down to when you get to the really expensive bikes, is weight.  You pay an extra couple hundred or even thousands of dollars, to have a bike that weighs a few ounces less.

Don't worry, I'm sure your bike is nice.

  6. Don't let some A-hole in a bike shop trouble you over your bike.  Was the guy that criticized your purchase an employee?  If he was find another shop.  My shop has bikes that sell in the $5000 plus range along with reasonably priced bikes and I have never heard them attack someone for their bike purchase.  If you bring in any bike and want it fixed they will fix it, they may tell you it economically infeasible but they won't criticize it.  If he was just someone hanging out in the store they probably don't know the value of a good bike.  I think most people who aren't into bikes would roll their eyes at spending over $300 dollars for a good bike.  I have never heard of your brand either, but I am sure there are more brands I haven't heard of than I have.  The best bike is the one you want to ride.  A $5000 Trek isn't any good to you if if you don't ride it.  ENJOY YOUR BIKE!!!!

  7. The only difference between most major manufacturers is the frame.  The components are usually from Shimano, and one bike with Ultegra level parts on it is really the same as any other bike with Ultegra parts.  In fact, the name on the frame is only paint after all.  The bike maker doesn't make the components, they just hang them on their frame.

Just because you haven't heard of a bike brand doesn't mean it's not fine for the job.  Ever heard of Wilier? Tommasini?  Dean?  Felt?  Rivendell?  Spooky Cycles?  Cyfac?  Indy Fab?  They aren't carried at most bike shops, but they are all fantastic frame builders.

The point is, do YOU like it?  Does it fit?  Do you get a smile on your face when you ride it?

If so, then who gives a d**n what anyone else thinks? Riding is about having fun and challenging yourself, not riding down a fashion catwalk.
