im 27, out of college

used to own a KX 80 when i was in middleschool, but had to sell it for my first car

anyway, i am thinking of getting into it again. im 5-8, and weight 190 lbs. i am thinking of a bike to buy to sort of learn on, and i am thinking that a 125cc would be fine to get back into action.

im thinking i can get a used one for at or around 1500 bucks.

is this the right size to you think? or should i just get the 250? and if you are into bikes, feel free to give me some good info on buying these used!

thanks,

  1. Depends on what you want to do with it, if you're into motocross then a two stroke 125 should work, a 250 would work well to though may be a bit more powerful than you want.

If you just want to do trail riding then a four stroke 250-450cc bike will be fine. Yes the CC's are larger but the power is more manageable for what you're doing with it.

    Additional Details:

Go with a 4 stroke, something geared towards trail riding, I'm going to have to recommend a newer Suzuki DRZ-400E. The motor is bullet proof and it has PLENTY of power. Two strokes, avoid them, they just require constant maintenance and need to have the top end rebuilt every so often (annoying as all h**l)

  2. I agree with the 4 stroke 250cc suggestions, but I am afraid you would grow out of such a bike too quickly.  You would probably do better with a 400.

Alternatively, one of my favorite bikes for trail riding is the Kawasaki KDX 220...great low end power for a 2 stroke yet still fun upper end power.  Plus, the bike hasn't changed in 10 years...meaning lots of new and used parts for this little jewel.

  3. i would go with the 125.  today's dirtbikes are a lot different than the old school ones.  The same size motor puts out a lot more power these days!

  4. Do yourself a favor and take a good look at both the Honda CRF250X and the Yamaha WR 250. Both are 4 stroke trail bikes - 250 cc engines, very forgiving suspension, electric start, headlight and a fairly comfortable seat.

Given your weight I'd stay away from anything with less power. While the 125 2 stroke is a blast to ride and comparable in size and speed with the two 4 strokes mentioned, it will be a handful in the majority of trail riding conditions. The 2 stroke is a race bike.

  5. me,ide go for the honda xr250 or 400...bullit proof..
