I love the comments...thank you. To clarify...I am going through teacher training for grades 4-8 and I am looking for ideas that can be applied in the classroom.

  1. I'm not really sure how to. The only ways I can think of is reading funny books with funny pictures. Fun poetry when they get a bit older. Children like things they can relate to.

  2. You could turn age-appropriate books into reader's theater scripts.  I love reader's theater because it teaches children to read with expression. It also allows the students to do repeated readings (rehearsal) without getting bored.  Repeated readings are proven to promote fluency.  Kids love it.  You can do this activity with any age. Here are some websites and sample scripts:

There are also reader's theater script books on Amazon.com

Students can even be taught to develop their own script using a favorite book. Good luck!

  3. When reading a story to them, take out the characters name and say a student's name instead.  They really get a kick out of it.

Also, I'm very animated and often times use song when teaching phonemes.

  4. As far as motivation, sometimes children like to act out the story and read special parts aloud.   Sometimes my grandchildren and I get silly and intentionally say the "wrong" word or two before we say the correct word.  Maybe I am not clear on what you mean by reading in a fun way.  Silent reading may take place in a special area like a rocking chair, on a pillow, in a tent, etc. Just sharing the excitement for reading or reading for a special purpose such as actually making pancakes can be fun too.

  5. Well, another way you could do it is have it be more physical. Ex... if you are reading Harry Potter then have roles assigned and then give students costumes.

You could also offer food as a prize for and work that you do.

Ex... Candy, maybe something that students crave like brownies or ice cream.

  6. read or get a book that's funny and if that dose not work act funny while your reading and make jokes till they die of laughter and if that doesn't work get a funny group and let them think of stuff.
