I have areas on the small pieces that are lumpy/ruffly. What can I do to straighten them out enough to join them to something else?

  1. Have you tried blocking them?  Pin them to cardboard or foamboard, blast them with steam from a clothes iron, and let them dry.  That's what I do with my afghan blocks, and it's amazing what sins blocking will hide.

  2. You have two choices ... try blocking as already recommended, or embrace the lumpy/ruffly as part of the freeform process as work does not need to be flat in order to be freeform.
