What should I add to my paper??

this is what i have so far please give me some advice. It has to be 3 pages long.

The most popular type of horse racing is known as Thoroughbred racing. Horse racing is an equestrian sport that has been practiced for a long time. Chariot racing in the early days is the same form of horse racing. The type of race and events all differ; it really depends on where the race is located each country has different rules and regulations. Thoroughbred racing has certain types of tracks. The races usually occur on a flat surface of dirt, polytrack, or grass. The races consists of a bunch of young horses usually around three years old.Thoroughbred races run at a wide variety of distances, from 5 furlongs to 1½ miles.

  1. Lengthen it a bit and go in to the other types of racing. Harness, Arabian, Quarter horse, and steeple chase just to name a few.

  2. My suggestion is to start with a history. Do a couple paragraphs about it. When it started, who started it, where is, the different types of racing (flat, steeplechase, pacing/trotting) (and the breeds that race). Go into the different surfaces and lengths. Get records and the averages for the times for a 1/4 mile etc. Use a table if you are allowed to.

Talk about the Triple Crown. What it is, when it started, some notable horses who have won it. Talk about the Breeders Cup.

Talk about some notable horses in racing history, Secretariat, Man o War, Ruffian, Barbaro and what made them great. Maybe end the paper with Barbaro as he is fresh in everyone's mind.

Make sure to check your spelling and grammer, and make sure you have an introduction that provides almost a roadmap to what you are going to talk about and a conclusion that wraps it all up.

Good luck! Sounds like a fun topic to write about! You have a good start, you just need to expand it more.

  3. You are missing one very vital sport when you talk only about thoroughbred racing- the steeplechase, or a race over fences. That sport is HUGELY popular in some parts of the world, such as England, where the sport originated. Like the other writers here, I would suggest that you do some research and start with a history of racing as a whole before writing. Also- chariot races were NOT an early type of horse racing. They were a separate event from the begining, and bore no resemblance at all to early horse races. Chariots are also pulled by more than one horse, ( I have seen some that were pulled by as many as 3) as they are much heavier and harder to control than today's modern sulkies.  And it's worth mentioning that chariots are very risky to drive because of their open backs, as well as because of their instablity- they tend to be very top heavy when loaded. ( This was likely the reason that the chariots belonging to the Pharoh's army in the Bible sank so quickly into the Red Sea, if you want to add a bit of folklore.)

Most racehorses nowadays are started under saddle as yearlings, and race for the first time in the spring of their 2 year old year. These little races are intended to get the horse used to competing, and the distances are very short- usually about 3 to 5 eighths of a mile in most cases. As the horse learns to race, the distances increase.  Races are run on a variety of tracks and surfaces, including dirt, turf or grass, polytrack, and in the case of harness racers, clay or crushed gravel. Races can be run in either direction, and can include one or more turns. Races in the US are only run one way, however- to the left, or counterclockwise.  Steeplechase courses frequently require that horses race up and down hills, as well as jumping fences at high speeds. The majority of these races are run on turf instead of dirt- turf is easier to jump on, and it provides better traction for running uphill.

I hope this helps you with your paper- I think maybe I have given you a little more background to work with.  Good luck.

  4. "The most popular type of horse racing is known as Thoroughbred racing."

Most popular where?  What distinguishes thoroughbred racing from any other type?  What other types are there? And why is "Thoroughbred" capitalized here?

"Horse racing is an equestrian sport"

    No kidding.  :)  Redundancy.

"that has been practiced for a long time."

    How long?  Where? By whom?

"Chariot racing in the early days is the same form of horse racing."

What early days?  Where?  "Same form" as what?

"The races consists of a bunch of young horses usually around three years old."

How many horses? "A bunch" is colloquial; don't use it in formal writing. What do you mean by "around"?  Do two-year-olds run?  How about seven-year-olds?  Why is there an emphasis on three-year-old horses (and there is!).  Also, check your subject-verb agreement ("races consists").

"Thoroughbred races run at a wide variety of distances, from 5 furlongs to 1½ miles."

What's a furlong?  How long does a race take?  What's the record for a mile and a quarter?  What does the phrase "most exciting two minutes in sports" refer to, and what does it mean?

You've got to address wagering somewhere in a paper on horse racing, don't you?  How does it work?  Is it responsible for racing's popularity, and to what extent?

You've got a good start, but a long way to go.  Good luck!

  5. add sumthing about Barbaro and his full baby brother Nicanor

  6. If you have any questions about the sport please IM or e-mail me at anytime.

  7. I think you could add some length to your paper by adding that currently there are three different forms of horse racing:  flat racing, which is basically what you've written about so far, where the horses all compete at a gallop on a track that has no obstacles;  harness racing, where instead of carrying a rider, the horses (which are a breed called Standardbreds) pull a driver in a two-wheeled vehicle called a "sulky" and race at either the trot or pace;  and steeplechase or hurdle racing, where the horses race over a course that includes a number of fences of varying height and construction.

If you give some discussion as to the various forms of racing, I think you'll be able to get your 3 pages.  Good luck!

  8. As much as I love thoroughbred racing I am not sure if it is the most popular. While I dont have the statistics handy to back me up, I would say that there are probably many more harness race tracks out there and many more harness horses than thoroughbreds. I live in Ontario and we have two thoroughbred racetracks (Woodbine and Fort Erie) and way too many harness tracks to even try listing. As far as your distances go I have seen thoroughbred races run  ranging in distances from 2 furlongs to over 2 miles, and if you were to look at European Thoroughbred racing you would find that a majority of their grass courses are nowhere near flat but undulating, sometimes running up, sometimes down, sometimes flat. You also fail to mention steeplechase racing which is done over a number of fences at distances up to three and four miles. Hopefully this gives you alittle more insight as to what you could look into for your paper. I think writing three pages on horse racing would be a breeze.

  9. horse-racing is know as the sport of kings, most of the races are for horses around 4 to 5 years old, and most of the young horses start their career at the distance of 4 to 4/1/2 furlongs, but now on the west coast they run races at the distance of 2 furlongs, the world championship for horse racing is held each year at the breeders' cup, and a different track is selected each time, the world most riches race is the Dubai world cup, in the middle east.
