...and I need a catchy opening. I am a 13 (thirteen) year old and this speech has to come from my memory and needs to be 10 minutes long! I am going to the National Forensics League (NFL) to debate and do this one person speech. I would like a catchy opening like "there is an issue at hand and you can help"-but not so lame. I am trying to reach out to people to tell them about the facts of Global Warming and how you can help, and if you don't, what will happen. I am planning to use some quotes from An Inconvenient Truth, and touch people's heart's-about the Polar Bears, and how they will all die out, as they can't find food, and the ice caps are melting. Also, I plan to say that places like Calcutta (India), San Francisco (California, US), and other major sea-side cities will flood and tons of people will die.

  1. tap leaks

  2. dont do that its a lie.

  3. I believe that once the ice(frosen water) will have melted on the poles the deserts on Earth will have disappeared too. So, I am not worried about global warming, at the contrary.

  4. Global warming is real. It has been going on for centuries as evidenced by the fact that glaciers once came as far south as Toronto. So what is all the fuss about now?

  5. Maybe these quotes from scientists will give you an idea.  Maybe the last one?

"We need action now to reduce emission of carbon dioxide."

    Stephen Hawking, Physicist

"Global warming is already starting, and there's going to be more of it. I think there is still time to deal with global warming, but we need to act soon. Humans now control global climate, for better or worse."

James Hansen, Ph.D. climate scientist, NASA

"Global warming is the most challenging problem our society has ever had to face up to. Ice is the canary in the coal mine of global warming."

    Britain's chief scientist David King

"By mid-century, millions more poor children around the world are likely to face displacement, malnourishment, disease and even starvation unless all countries take action now to slow global warming."

Michael Oppenheimer, professor of geosciences and international affairs at Princeton University

“DuPont believes that action is warranted, not further debate."

Charles O. Holliday, Jr., CEO, DuPont (Engineer)

"We are not saying that the Earth's temperature is just going to rise. In general, as energy is added to a system, the fluctuations in the system increase. So, we expect more storms, more droughts, more wildfires, more floods, more fluctuations of all kinds. What we are saying is that weather conditions will become more volatile due to the impact of humans."

    -- S. Mukherjee & D. Brouse (2004)

"The drafting of reports by the world’s pre-eminent group of climate scientists is an odd process. For many months scientists contributing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change tussle over the evidence. Nothing gets published unless it achieves consensus. This means that the panel’s reports are extremely conservative – even timid. It also means that they are as trustworthy as a scientific document can be."

    George Monbiot

"The fact that the community overwhelmingly supports the consensus is evidenced by picking up any copy of Journal of Climate or similar, any scientific program at the meetings, or simply going to talk to scientists. I challenge you, if you think there is some un-reported division, show me the hundreds of abstracts that support your view - you won't be able to. You can argue whether the consensus is correct, or what it really implies, but you can't credibly argue it doesn't exist."

    NASA's Gavin Schmidt

"There's a better scientific consensus on this [climate change] than on any issue I know.

Global warming is almost a no-brainer at this point,You really can't find intelligent, quantitative arguments to make it go away."

    Dr. Jerry Mahlman, NOAA

"We've got about 20 years to turn (greenhouse gas emissions) around or it's going to cost the world a lot environmentally but also economically," said Terry Hughes, a leading Australian coral specialist.

"We humans have built a remarkable socioeconomic system during perhaps the only time when it could be built, when climate was sufficiently stable to allow us to develop the agricultural infrastructure required to maintain an advanced society."

"If the Earth came with an operating manual, the chapter on climate might begin with a caveat that the system has been adjusted at the factory for optimum comfort, so don't touch the dials."

  6. In the fiction section ?

  7. You might also want to discuss the continuous changes in the Earth's climate that have occurred since the rocks first cooled. You may want to cite the examples that your audience is already familiar with such as the previous Ice Ages that created the Great Lakes and Mississippi rivers; the "mini-Ice Ages" that helped bring about the Black Death and the Irish Potato Famine or the warmer periods in-between that allowed the Vikings to colonize Greenland.

You may want to point out that the baby polar bear story is a total fabrication and that Gore and company had to used computer generated graphics for their opening scenes of melting icecaps and glaciers.

You may also want to point out the parallel between this "crisis" and previous ones, such as the global cooling predictions of the 1970's and the 1920's. Remind them that the same arguments used to support global warming theories had predicted New York City would be covered in glaciers by 2000.

You may also want to remind your audience that the major thrust of the "man-made global warming" supporters is to limit American economic growth. The "man-made global warming" crowd will also often conced that any changes we make now will have no effect on the coming climate change ... which brings into question the entire program.

You may want to remind your audience that the hysteria of the "man-made global warming" crowd has spawned a multi-billion dollar industry selling fraudulent "carbon credits" that have done nothing to decrease carbon emission.

  8. Promoting such a scam will be embarrassing to you in a few years when it is revealed as a scam and people who applaud you today will tell you how silly you were tomorrow.

Happened with global starvation scam, overpopulation scam, global cooling scam, hole in the ozone scam, Y2K scam, and an endless list of other "Chicken Little" stories.

  9. There is a serious effort to sue Al Gore for the lies in Inconvenient Truth and the harm they are causing.  As others have suggested, going on record to support a lie is unwise.
