I applied at one place, a sister store responded. What to do?

I applied at a store recently in a location that is convienent for me since it is just down the street of where I live and on my commute home (which is about 30min) it is right on the way. I put in an application online, since that is the only way they accept them. I went in and spoke with a manager who suggested I called their hiring manager in the morning since they expanded the building extensively and would be needing more people.

I did so and she said she would be pulling applications and would give me a call the next day. She also mentioned that they were hiring and would need people. Well, I did get a call today, but it was from a different store- different managers. I never heard from the store manager that I originally called from as of yet.

Now I don't want to be rude, but the store is too far away for my commute to be beneficial for me. However, I need the job since I moved into the area and am in severe need of something closer to home. Should I call the store that left a message for an interview and let them know it is too far away? Will that damage my chances with the store that I really want? And should I call the hiring manager from the store that I originally (and specifically) applied to and... I don't know what to ask her? Where's that call you told me about?

As for qualifications - I have extensive work background in both the positions I applied for. I also used to work for the company in my younger days. I've never been fired or really have a blemish on my work record that could possibly make me unqualified.

Looking for some suggestions or answers from some of the more experienced. Thanks.

  1. I retired in a management position.  Call or send a letter outlining your situation.  That should keep you in consideration since most in the same situation nowadays just fail to show up.  Make sure you are polite and leave a means for them to contact you.  You would be surprised at the numbers of people on the basis of good manners alone.

  2. It's not rude to ask.  Simply explain your situation.  If it's too far, then it's too far.  Be honest.

  3. Go for the interview, explain your situation, and be willing to take whatever they offer you at the moment, in order to have a job.  Things can change in the future.  You can always transfer.

  4. The sister store could be helping the store near you for interviews ,training and such a call is cheap to find out for sure.
