Question:

I arrive to Santo Domingo airport at 11:15pm. Where should I stay that night?

Do hotels in Santo Domingo take reservations? If they do, are there many where the front desk will be open at midnight when I arrive? In my book I read that there is a hotel near the airport. Would it be best to stay there the night of my arrival? I would rather stay in Santo Domingo than near the airport, if I can find a simple, clean place that will accommodate me that late.

My other question is... when is the Merengue Festival? I read about it being at the end of July, does anyone know the exact dates?

  1. make sure that you get a taxi cab driver from the air port..taxi drivers that are dressed in uniforms...make sure you ask for help from the people that work at the air port..there are a couple of hotels close to there it should run you like 30-40 bucks for one night..don't let the taxi driver charge you 40 dollars for the ride, its not worh it..well actually it might be worth it because gas is 6 dollars a gallon..don't know anything about the merengue festival..but you are lucky to be going there..make sure you buy a presidente beer if you ever want to cool off.and its going to be hott.

  2. Hello,

I would strongly recommend that you book your hotel in advance. If there is no delays with the flight, you will be arriving at midnight, with check out and everything you will be getting out of there around 12:30 A.M. and that won't be the time for you to shop around for a hotel. Start you search now on line, make phone calls, look at your options. A lot of airlines offer a discount when you book the hotel through them. Remember, you will be tired, and the last thing you would want to do is to look for hotels in the middle of the night, with a taxi driver you don't know, in a country you probably don't know either.

In the other hand, regarding the festival, I do not know. You can ask around when you arrive and I am sure you can find out the dates once you are there.

    Have fun and God bless.

  3. If you get into Santo Domingo late at night, then you DEFINITELY want to stay in a GOOD hotel... some of the hotels downtown are seedy and miserable..  One of the WORST hotel experiences I have EVER had was in a downtown hotel in Santo Domingo... the WALLS were CRAWLING... shudder...

Stay is a good hotel that late at night... SD is NO PLACE to be late at night and alone
