I put a resume on a nanny website, a family called me and wanted to to do an application. I did and we talked for a long time. They seemed nice. By the next morning they had booked me a flight to Italy on vacation with them. I hadn't even really said yes. So eventually after talking to them a lot I did agree. Before I left they had changed the flight to Mexico and didn't tell me vacation plans had changed. They paid for me to get my passport and sent me travel money. Now that I am here their house is a horrible nasty mess (dog f***s and urine on the floor, garbage not in can, garbage and clutter everywhere) and cleaning was not a part of the job (light vacuuming and some laundry were described). I am here and the family is great, but I can't live in this kind of mess. But they have invested so much in getting me here, flights, passport, new furniture, paint, and all, but is it really proper for them to invite a nanny to live and work with them in this kind of place without some kind of fair warning?

PLEASE HELP!

  1. no its not, its not part of your contract, nor is it a good working enviroment  which you are entitled to

  2. Who cares how much money they invested in getting you there, no one should live like that. And they have kids living there!

I say you should ask them to invest some money in a housekeeper and if they don't RUN . . . as fast as you can!

  3. Have a talk about the situation with them. Personally, I'd clean up the mess, then ask them about keeping the dog outside, since I am sure the dog's the one trashing the place!  After cleaning, I'd mention that I am not a "dog person" and don't like cleaning up after the animal. If that is a problem, then try to find an arrangement where you can stay till they find a replacement or they return home from their vacation.

  4. Tell them that you have some other jobs that you wanted to look at first and that you will give them a call back as soon as you know something and fly back home be as nice as you can about it and if it really that dirty I think I would be calling someone like dcs or somebody because if they are that lazy then something is terribly wrong I wish I could afford a nanny ...lol. good luck!

  5. I was in the same situation.  I accepted a job with a family that I only spoke to through emails and on the phone.  They flew me out to their house when it was time for me to start, and it was awful!  Their dog was not potty trained, and pooped only in the basement (my living quarters) they never changed the cat litter, they had trash everywhere, you couldn't even walk through their house without stepping on garbage, clothes, etc.  In fact, they had moldy dishes all over the house, no toilet paper, it was awful.  They were such a busy and chaotic family cleaning just wasn't something they had time for.  They got a cleaning service who came out once a month, but it didn't help.  I started cleaning the areas of the house that I had to be in, and left the rest, you get used to it.  It's not your house, and it's not your place to tell them how to take care of it.  If you can't handle it, tell them now, before you are there any longer...  This way they can find a replacement, if they were smart, you weren't the only person they were talking with.  I ended up falling in love with the family I met, and worked for them for years...  We came to arrangements once I knew them better on how we could all keep the house clean.

  6. First things first. The most important thing that you must do is don't clean anything!! You must set your boundaries first and foremost, and if you start off by cleaning then it's going to carry on that way. If I were you I would say in a very calm and friendly way that you cannot live in a place like this and that if they don't get a regular cleaner in then for health and safety reasons you're going to have to leave. Good luck!

  7. You should clean it up and then talk to them about maintaining it. Let them know you're uncomfortable living with them in this environment. Also, talk with them about if they'd expected and anticipated that this would be the kind of work you'd be doing. Another thing, if they have older kids, then teach them to clean it up. Its kind of your job to take care of the kids and help them grow up, right?
