I book e-tickets with irctc.if i book wait list and opt for thatkal updation, will i be automatically promoted

when booking i find 254 seats in train number xxxx for thatkal quota.i booked wait list ticket and opted "yes" for thatkal upgration.

will i be auomatically upgraded to thatkal quota on the opening day of the thtkal booking? will i be allotted seat on thatkal quota from the 254 seats and the public gets only the remaining seatds after clearing the thatkal-opted quota?is the procedure a fool proof one?

I doubt if such automatic conversion of waitlisted ticket toTatkal is possible. If it is - it does not make sense to say that tatkal tickets are issued only 5 days before the departure date.  

Please check, according to me - All you have is a normal waitlisted ticket and it won't be upgraded to tatkal on its own.

You will have to book tatkal with the additional fare and after tatkal bookings are open.
