miscarriage at around midnight on a Tuesday so I knew that my gynecologist would not be in until the next morning to do a D&C. Here's the question. If I had my own gynecologist booked, should another doctor at the hospital have taken me down to a delivery ward to do a D&C that same night? And without an anesthetic? Without going into the matter in too much detail, I would just like someone's opinion, as it was very painful, and I haven't been able to conceive since. This was 10 yrs ago, so I cannot do anything anyway but would just like to know!

  1. if you miscarried at midnight you should have gone to the ER and the OBGYN on call would have come or they would have called your OB and if needed they would have done a D&C or if they felt they could wait they would see if you would pass on your own then schedule a D&C for a later date( a day or so)

  2. My daughter had a miscarriage on her first pregnancy and then got pregnant again and had an ultrasound at about 2 months. They could not find a heartbeat and told her that they would have her wait up to 2 weeks to see if she naturally disposed of the pregnancy. I was a upset about that since it seems very traumatic but after about a week and half everything happened naturally. Hope this helps ease your conscience.

  3. No, it is not my experience that once a miscarriage is dx in the hospital that they do a D&C the same night.  I have infertility, and have had 3 miscarriages, none were handled the same day, and all by my gyn.  Some of my miscarriages go back 10 years also, my first was July 1997.  All of my D&C's/D&E's were without pain under anesthesia.  The least invasive treatment should be the first line of treatment always.  That should be to pass the pregnancy naturally, possible with serial hcg levels drawn.  Also, methotrexate (a cancer drug) is given sometimes if the hcg is still rising but there is no chance of a viable pregnancy.  Methotrexate I have had 1x, it attacks fast growing cells.  It has to be given very early, i was 6 weeks.  I suggest going to a RE if possible so it can be determined if their is damage to the lining of the uterus preventing pregnancy.
