  1. Question:

i bough a cd but will not play in computer, but i put others in the computer and they work, what's wrong?

    Answer:

    Hi,

Since your computer's drive plays other CD's, you can assume that it works.

    1) Is this CD purchased from a store or from a private person?

I would expect a store bought one to work, but one that someone created would be suspect that "it" was created incorrectly.

    2) When it is in your computer, can you look at the CD's contents? Or is the CD totally unrecognized?

    3) If it is a music CD, can it play on another player (like a CD player) that is not also a computer?

If so, then there's nothing wrong with the CD. I would then suspect that there's a program on the CD to block it from playing on a computer OR your computer has a program to block it from playing certain formats.

    4) Can any of your friends play it on their computer? [What about the person who created it?]

I too have 5 CD's that are not recognized by my computer. I was ripping my hundreds of CD's to place them on my IPOD. At least one of them pre-dates music theft and should not have any protective code built in.

    Good Luck!

  2. Newer drives won't recognize newer CDs with RIAA-inspired scramble codes at the beginning of tracks, usually just the first one or two tracks. This is a way of keeping you from ripping the content. I am guessing that your computer has a drive/software that is cooperating more with the intent of the record company, that is, interfering with your right to copy your own CDs.

  3. Maybe it is a DVD and your computer just has a CD ROM so it can't read the disc. Or the disk is screwed up.
