I bought a 21 years old 250d mercedes (w124 model) of ebay? still does 42miles per gallon?

it is more fuel efficient then the new models they make? - oh and it is a manual as well.?

It's more efficient largely because of its fairly low power.  The older MB diesels were tough and economical but were not noted for their power output.

WOW 71  horsepower! I don't know how you can stand that rapid acceleration. After the old 240D and 300d 300TD Mercedes Benz Diesels were made much lighter. Just remember your making smoke and particulate matter. Enjoy the Fuel Milage just don't expect it to merge into traffic with the A/C turned on on a hot day unless there is plenty of room. You will not enjoy replacing any parts. A/C compressor Hitachi compressor unit costs over 900 US. And maintence can really take lots of cash.

I have a 76 240D and yes they are slow but after third gear it moves great and I get 40+ all the time with or with out the A/C. Enjoy!!

Yea, not at all unusual for an old mercedes diesel, especially a 4 speed. The concept you have to understand for this is that they have extremely low engine output. Your Mercedes made 70HP when it was new, now it is probably more like 60HP. Also, diesel engines in general are much more efficient. Since diesels use compression to ignite the fuel, there is never any wasted fuel. In a gasoline engine, however, it is a very common problem to have wasted fuel. Unless the spark is perfect, the engine will not run at its full efficiency. In a diesel you do not have to worry because there is no spark. Have fun and enjoy your car!

Also, be very, very careful that your car doesn't overheat. After 1985, Mercedes stopped using cast iron heads. Your car has a cast iron block with an aluminum head. If your car overheats, your head will warp and you will have to replace it. VERY COSTLY!!
