Is it a fake? How can I tell or verify that it's a true Canon product?

  1. What filter size does the lens take? If it's 52mm, you most likely bought the previous version of the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro that does not have USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor). Instead of having USM, the lens has a micromotor that autofocuses a bit slower than the newer USM version. In reality, this will have next to no effect on your macro shots, as virtually all macro is done with manual focus. Otherwise, the lens is a superb piece of optical equipment, sharp as a tack and gives beautiful, saturated colors. The lens has all the features that you could expect of a top-tier macro lens.

  2. Where did you buy it?  If the lens was substantially below the price found in a store like B&H Photo, then there is the chance that you bought a gray market camera  ... and those need to  be avoided at all costs

Take the lens into your local camera store that sells Canon's and see what they say.

The question you need to ask, does it perform well using your Canon camera.
