  1. a miniDV vcam must be FIREWIRE400**-connected to pc to upload video thru video capture or video editing* software while vcam is ON PLAYBACK.  Note: DV or Firewire port of vcam is 4pin. Before cable purchase** (Vcam/4pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC (4/ 6pin?), check pc for DV or firewire port, whether 4 or 6 pin. If none, install firewire card: pci for pc or pcmcia for laptop.

    for starters, free Windows Movie Maker* (XP-wmm2 & Vista-wmm6) provides simple & easy way to learn the ropes < click help for details>. Upgrade to intermediate video editing applications accdg. to need & skill level

          video editing process- XP/wmm2

          >>> open wmm- start/all programs/wmm->TASK pane

    1. Capture video stream** - editing software remotely controls vcam operations

    2. Edit- drag/drop video files->timeline & enhance w/effects, transition, music & titles

    3. Finish (render)- save Movie –OK for youTube, also save Project.msmmw file

          >>> Share-burn to CD (if DvD, use DvD authoring app, e.g.,DvD Flick, Nero, etc.)

    Similarly: Vista/wmm6- Import/ Edit/ Publish=>auto-shifts to WindowsDvD authoring app->burn to DvD

  2. Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

  3. Your camra can take two types of images. One is digital still image and the other is digital video.

    Your digital still image is recorded in a memory card like Memory Stick Duo Pro. This still pictures can be transferred in either way from your computer and camera by USB. You cannot transfer digital movie through this USB port. Picture Motion Browser also remain inactive and instructs to add an i-Link cable (or Firewire Cable, IEEE 1394 standard) to start fransferring video.

    When you will add a firewire hardware with your computer then the digital movie gets transferred through this firewire port. Go ahead installing a firewire hardware. It comes with basically of two types. One that costs very less is the only transfer device. The other type comes with Digital Video Capture Card. This type costs according to sepecifications. Your picture motion browser will aslo start working with video files when it will find and firewire port attached with your computer.
