I bought a LAN adapter for the nintendo wii to hook up to my computer but it's not working.?

I don't have another Lan to hook up to the back of my computer because the modem for high speed internet is hooked up to that. I went out today and bought a 5-port workgroup switch but everytime I disconnect the cable from the back of the computer into the port the computer says that there is no connection. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

how do you do your connection? do you have to activate something in your pc to get then to the internet? if so, you have a modem that is not a router, you will need to buy a router (www.linksys.com / wrt54gs is great and will give you also wifi connectivity).

Once you buy it, you will be needing to get your user id and your password (provided by your internet service provider), then you will need to connect your modem to the router (it has a port that says internet or something like that).

Connect your PC to one of the ports in the linksys and then do the setup (there is a document in your router showing you how to do it).

Once your setup is done, connect the console to other port, and voila! your local area network will be connected to the internet

You have to have at least one line from your computer to the port, and then another line from that to the 5-port.  Beyond that, that's all I know.  If there's no connection to your computer it will have no internet.
