It has been wonderful the 4 clips I shot. I loaded about 10 rounds into the clips. It jammed on me twice. is it due to over loading the clip or....? thanks for your input.

  1. Ruger makes good but chunky semi autos.

It is possible you have weak mag springs and thats causing the malfunction.. but my bet would be you're limpwristing the pistol. Try strengthening up your grip a little ,but not so tight your hands turn colors.

    Here's a definition of limpwristing

  2. The triggers are a bit sloppy, but overall the P89's are a pretty descent package. Having owned one for about 15 years, it's a pistol I still enjoy shooting a couple times a year. I have had problem free operation for many year, but I have a few of suggestions for your jamming problems:

    1. Do a complete disassembly and cleaning. With new, and particularly new-to-me, firearms I always 'soak' the parts in a solvent/lubricant like CLP. You can use a separate cleaner and lubricant, I just find CLP is easier and highly effective at cleaning and lubrication. After they sit for an hour, I scrub them with a toothbruth. I then reapply the CLP and let them sit overnight. After that, just a wipe down to remove excess and reassembly.

    2. Try different ammo. Some firearms can be particular about certain types of ammo. I know that Winchester (white box), Wolf, and Speer Lawman both run flawlessly in mine.

    3. Does it jam with a particular mag or mags? Examine your mags and look for any visual problems such as deep dents or bent lips. You may also want to consider disassembling your mags and doing a clean and lubrication to them. Give those springs a minor "stretch" while you are at it. I stress minor, though.

    4. If all else fails, take it to gun smith. Either that or just live with it. 2 jams in 4 mags is hardly catastrophic so long as you are not depending on it in a personal defense role.

    Good luck!

  3. Try a different brand of ammunition. Once you find a brand that works well, you should stick with it. Try Federal rounds,  I heard Remington or Winchester do not work very well with P89.

  4. ruger automatics are very well made, medium class pistols. congrats on a good choice.

are you a begining semi-auto pistol shooter? if so, you may be "limp wristing" the gun. this is when you fail to hold the gun tight enough. it can cause the slide to fail to go all the way back, and the fired case fails to eject properly. be sure to make your grip firm when firing.

REMEMBER: Gun control means using both hands!

  5. The Ruger P-89 is a terrific 9mm.  It is strong (even rated for +P+ ammo), reliable (I'm surprised yours jammed even once, I took the "Semi-Automatic Pistol Proficiency" course firing 500 rounds without a single malfunction of anykind), accurate (I've seen a girl with a P-89 out-shoot a guy with a Sig 226) and high capacity (do you have the 15 round magazines?).

Make sure you disassemble your magazines and run a clean rag through them.  Don't oil, just clean and tap the base of your magazine like every five rounds you load.  Keeping your P-89 clean and properly lubricated and you have a pistol you can depend on everytime.  Remember, FMJ for practice and defensive ammo (115 to 127 grain hollow points) for defensive purposes.

If you haven't done so take the gun safety course and if available in your State get your CCW.

  6. I have one as well and I love mine.  I haven't had any trouble with mine jamming however.  You may want to give it a good cleaning and try another type of ammunition and see if it improves.  I got a feeling it could be due to debris in the gun or your P89 might not like the particular brand of ammo you tried.

  7. I have a P89 in 9mm and think it is a great gun. I have never had a jam in over 1000 rounds. I shoot Remington FMJ and hollow points with no feeding problems.

  8. all guns jam best bet  is to clean it out buy a kit at wall mart -i like that gun i plan 2 get one

  9. I have never had mine jam.

You may have a problem with the magazine. Either the spring is too weak or it's bent. The springs can get weak if you keep the clip loaded all the time.
