  1. John is right. You are caught in the middle on using the 6.8 for deer. The usual general solution to limited power is to increase bullet weight somewhat, but that also cuts range, velocity for bullet expansion, and trajectory. For the deer woods, where shots average 75 yards or so, and broadside lungshot presentations are common, everything should work out fine, with standard or heavier option bullets. But out in the open, using a cartridge like the 6.8 or the 30-30 creates distance problems. So it boils down to where in Texas you are going to hunt, as Texas has lots of every kind of hunting there is! Regards, Larry.

  2. The sectional density of the bullets normally loaded is such that I wouldn't use it, but the gun writers were of course killing deer almost before the thing came off the drawing board. If you limit yourself to broadside shots, it should do well enough.

  3. It's a bit light for larger deer.

You'll have to get close and place your shots.

  4. Ruger Mini 14??? --- My favorite rifle.... Deer? - yes its a decent cartridge for deer.....  My only complaint about the Mini in the 6.8SPC is the cost of ammunition... Thats why I have the Ruger Mini 14 in .223 and Mini 30.... Of course the Mini 14 in .223 is to light for deer and although the Mini 30 chambered in 7.62X39MM is perfect for deer it is only good to 150 yards.....

The Ruger Mini 14 or 30 is in my opinion one of the finest carbines that money can buy. That being said  - keep in mind these are not perfect rifles. There accuracy is decent but they are no long range bolt action rifle..... If you dont expect sub MOA accuracy or make super long distance shots these rifles will not disappoint. You will have no problems dropping deer under 175 yards......

  5. Would not have been my 1st or even 3rd choice of caliber but yes it should work with the right bullet.

  6. 6.8SPC is a great round for deer class game. If your Mini-14 is anything like mine was (mine was 223) it will be a great/fun rifle, but accuracy limited its range. Check out 68forums.com for more info especially the "hunting" section where there are pics of hogs, deer, caribou, and I think even elk. Welcome to the 6.8SPC club! It is proving itself quite a good little round.
