  1. Well, it's your choice, whether to have a usable tomtom or not.

Most satnav errors, by the way, result from misprogramming. If you set it to give you the shortest route, that's what it will do even if that route incorporates some obscure back road that hasn't seen a wheel for years.  I never look at mine, just listen to the voice and treat it as someone sat beside me map-reading - if it's obvious the map-reader is sending me down a dubious route I ignore it, just as I would herself!

  2. Good idea Spike H except for one flaw in your plan  -  The Tom Tom One doesn't have a data card.

To the original poster, Why do you think you should get any maps you want free?  and who pays £10 for a road atlas.  I've got a 2008 one in March for £4.99

  3. It may be possible but I spent many hours trying to download an up-to-date map for mine, and it never worked. The official download is best.

Why didn't you simply buy a western europe tom tom? I would have taken you from Belgium to home.

Or you could simply have followed the E40 west to Calais, and then got the ferry, and found your way from Dover!

Anyone who says sat-navs are "useless" is misinformed. People are the problem, but the hardware is excellent. ANY map can have inaccuracies, and a map is only current at the time it is compiled. Sat-nav mishaps arise from accidents caused by gazing at the screen rather than the road, and from using them incorrectly. I have found mine to be an invaluable tool, both for driving a taxi going to out of town addresses, and in my last job when I would simply be given an address in any European city and would have had no chance of finding it otherwise. Setting them to "fastest route" avoids the problems of going up obscure narrow lanes, and regular updates and corrections overcome things such as changes to traffic flow or introduction of bollards etc.

  4. Why not pre-plan you route on paper and if you have some-one with you then they can act as navigator,it will be a lot safer!!!

Remember your are driving on the opposite side of the road to the U.K.and you will have plenty of distractions and a Tom Tom will only create more

They have been proved to be useless by giving the wrong information.

Be safe is better than been sorry.

  5. download them off the internet and transfer them onto the sd card of your tom tom
