Question:

I bought a book about Unix but i would like to learn about Linux. Is it the same since it is Unix based?

I'm planning to use a Linux OS sometime soon, but i'm a noob at it so i bought a book about UNIX since i couldn't find any Linux books at the moment....but are the commands i learn in this book the same when i start using Linux....if there is a difference, what are the differences? thank you for your time....

  1. Linux is an operating system based on Unix. The Mac OS is also based on Unix. Windows is based on DOS, which is much less stable and secure than Unix.

    Linux has several distributions, or distros. These are each separate linux operating systems, because there is no generic linux operating system. Most distros are completely free, and there is plenty of free software available to accomplish just about everything. Some distros have evolved dramatically over the years and are very simple and reliable.

    Linux is great for technical people that prefer options, security, and stability over ease of use. Few computers come with linux pre-installed (Dell and Lenovo probably still carry a few). You probably will need some understanding of UNIX commands if you want to use any linux distro.

    My second favorite operating system (Mac OS X Leopard is #1) is Ubuntu, which is a linux distro. It's much better than Windows ever was or ever will be. SuSe Linux probably isn't too bad, neither. There are tons of options, and most are free or cheap. The Ubuntu OS is completely free.
