Guinness floating widgetA widget is a device placed in a container of beer to manage the characteristics of the beer's head. The original widget was patented in Ireland by Guinness. The "floating widget" found in cans of beer is a hollow sphere, 3 cm in diameter.

I have seen the patent papers on the web but cannot find them yet. For now..

It has to do with a pressure differential and release. The widget is loaded with CO2 and nitrogen gases. It (gas) is held in place by the pressure of the sealed can. Once the can is opened and thus the pressure released the widget releases its gas. The small gas bubbles up through the beer forming a foam at the top. It is best realized when pouring into a glass.

  2. Why would you shake it up. Just drink it, cold of course.

  3. NO!!! If you do, you'll end up with 90% of the beer being head.

  4. shake it like a polaroid picture
