Question:

I bought a digital converter and now I no longer receive the major network stations. Why?

I have an omni-directional antenna on the outside of my house. Before the digital converter was connected we got all the major networks and PBS. Now we only get PBS and a few other odd stations that come in and out. We can't see the news now. What can we do to correct this? Are we domed to getting cable? Are we too far from the major network station to receive a signal? Are digital waves weaker than analog? Is there any special device that can help us?

  1. Most full power TV stations have had digital signals in the air since about 2002.  There are a few exceptions, but not many.

The first thing to do is to see what you are supposed to be getting.  Visit http://www.antennaweb.org and put in your ZIP code.  You should get a list of the stations in your area, what channels they are on and where to point your antenna.  There is also guidance there on choosing antennas for your situation.

Personally, I can't remember seeing an omni outdoor TV antenna, all I can remember seeing are directional.  Also, because of the change, many of the new digital assignments are UHF.  I suspect that you have a type of antenna that does not handle UHF well.

Most cases of not receiving digital stations are because of a poor signal into the receiver.  With digital, either you get a perfect signal or nothing, there is no in between.  You probably need a better antenna.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

  2. You should check the tv guide website to see if your network stations are broadcasting in digital yet.  Put in your Zip code and select your cable service, check to see if there is two listings for each of the networks.  Example: channel 11 and 311 are both CBS here.  311 is the digital one.

All the local channels here in Houston are in analog and in digital.

Digital signals are weaker, you might have to mount an outside antenna.  And you either get it or you don't, there is no snow or partial pictures involved.  So, you have to have a strong enough antenna to get the signal.

  3. Because they haven't gone digital yet.

  4. because the digital switchover hasnt' happened yet. You don't have to use the converter yet.

  5. pretty sure you can get some kind of device that gives you a choice between the way you had it and then your new connection. do you have a radio shack dealer close by.? cant you keep your outside antenna hooked to the tv and shut off the digital converter? when you just want the major networks.?
