and was trying to connect it to my old f.m. tuner. I was told this won't work because the tuner doesn't have an HDMI port and I would have to buy a newer model with the port.

Is this true or can I use the av cables from the tv to the tuner? So the connections would be: HD satellite box to tv (HDMI CABLE), tv to fm tuner (av cable).

Thanks

  1. Yes, and you have options.

Does your hd satellite box have analog outputs (red and white outputs).  If they do, then you can connect the sat box directly to your fm 'tuner' (I assume you mean receiver because a tuner only receives radio broadcasts).  If the sat box doesn't have analog outputs, then you can take the analog output from your TV (if they are present) and plug them into the analog inputs in your receiver.

  2. You never actually say what you are trying to accomplish here. I'm going to assume you mean to have the TV audio play over your receiver speakers. If that is your plan, then you need to find audio out jacks on the TV and audio in jacks on your receiver. Now, since you have given us no info, you will have to figure out what audio jacks to use. If both have optical, use it. It could be the only choice you will have is the red and white RCA phono jacks, which is going to be no better than what the TV already has built in.

  3. Wait..what?

"HD radio" is not the same as "HDTV".  "HD Radio" is just a stupid marketing term.

If you have HD satellite, and also want to get surround sound from it, you will need to connect the satellite box to your TV with a HDMI cable, then connect your satellite box to your surround sound receiver with an optical audio cable.  While HDMI does carry both HD video and digital surround sound, the receiver cannot decode any signal on the HDMI cable - it can only pass the whole thing to your TV.  As a result, it's mostly pointless connecting anything HDMI to your receiver since your TV usually has more HDMI ports anyways.

I specify HDMI here because it's one of the few cables that will support a HDTV signal.  You could also use component video - it'll look just as good, but I prefer HDMI as it's a single cable, instead of 3 (or 5, if you count the audio signal).

Your FM tuner should remain connected to the surround sound receiver as well - just use those speakers as they're much better than your TV's built-in ones.

  4. you were told wrong.  but av cable isn't what you need.... rca cable, one red, one white, or sometimes black.  av cable adds a yellow for video.

side note: i'm assuming by "tuner", you mean amp, or receiver.  the tuner is simply a radio.
