I bought a kodak m573 from my friend. I didn't come with the charger, so I bought a charger for the lithium battery. I even bought a new battery and I can't get it to turn on. Do I have to have the ac adapter? Or can I just charge the battery and use it?

if so are you charging the battery in the camera? or does the battery have it's own charger?

Initial charges on batteries can be up to 12 hours or longer regardless of what the charging light says.

The AC adaptor is only for running the Camera without a battery.

Go to a Camera store and ask to test the Camera out with one of their Batteries.

It could be that the Camera is faulty.

Did it work for you before you got it?
