Question:

I bought a used car and the odometer doesn't work

It's a 92 cougar, in good condition. The lady I bought it from had it sitting in her yard for a long time. On the second day after I bought it, I went to the gas station and filled it up. I reset the trip counter and five miles later, I noticed the trip and odometer had stopped working. The speedometer and everything else still works. Needless to say, it didn't pass inspection because of that, and now it's just sitting.

  1. Hi

That is a very common problem to those speedometers and i reapir at least one a week.

The speedo is driven electronically using a speed sensor.

The odometer is driven using a little motor inside the speedometer.

There is a tiny plastic gear between the motor and main odometer. The gear is quite fragile and becomes very brittle over time.

Pull apart the speedometer and replace this gear to fix the problem.

i hope this helps. Good Luck!
