How can I replace the slides without making the drawers sit too low and create a gap? And also, can I switch to metal slides instead?? The drawers are very wide and deep.

  1. You can always put in new slides... but do the current slides hold the drawer in place and allow the drawer to slide?  If so, you shouldn't be able to see the slides unless the drawers are out and if only you know they are "chewed up" - who cares?  To replace the slides would be a lot of work - and new metal slides (unless you are buying ball bearing style) don't always hold up as well as wooden slides...  and there not cheap.  To replace them is not a do-it-yourself type project.  Drawers take a little experience in carpentry or furniture making (cabinetry).
