I bought a 1963 Ford F100 a few years ago from a neighbor. It doesn't run, and I never got a title upon purchase. Now I'm gearing up to restore the vehicle. But before I spend all my money on it, I need to obtain the title. The neighbor moved away quite awhile ago. How do i get a title for an older car in Texas without one? Also, will I have to pay taxes or such when I get the title? Are older cars exempt? Anybody, please help. Thanks.

  1. You can go down to the county tax office and have them do a "lost title" search and obtain it for a fee. You won't have to pay taxes 'til you register the vehicle.

Last time I did this, I was looking for one on an old Panhead Harley we found in Lubbock. By the time I was done, it cost me about $275.

  2. In most states you can apply for a title for an "abandoned" vehicle or reconstructed. This might be easier and cheaper than a lost title, which the previous owner must sign.
