and nothing happened and it said something like it will take 30 mins then it offered me iphone software did i get ripped off?

You did get ripped off because you don't buy it - you download it as a free update from Apple via iTunes. The only thing you might want to buy are some of the apps from the iPhone apps store although there are a lot of free ones there too.
