I worry that pets mart is telling me stuff to sell stuff and I really want to make sure I have the right set up for my beardy. I ready that the uvb needs to be close to the beardy I just dont know if on top of the screen is close enough. What are the best veggies to feed my beardy? I finely chop up collards and carrots but I have read something about MBD and they named those two veggies with having oxalates which didnt sound like a good thing should I be worried? And do I need a vitamin on top of calcium dusted on the crickets?

  1. I work at Petco and am guessing that their kit is similar, if not exact to the one we carry. The set up is fine, it should have come with a 20g long, correct? This is perfect for a starter and small beardie. The UVB needs to be between 10 and I think its 18 inches from the beardie to be affective, which in the 20 long it will be this.

Be sure to check your temps, best way is by getting a probe thermometer. You need to have one on both the hot side and cool side. And make sure the humidity is less then 40%.

I buy the Spring Mix lettuce for my beardie, and I mix in some broccoli normandy and some mixed veggies, which can both be found in the frozen veggie area of the grocery store. I of course thaw out what I mix in with his lettuce. They may not eat their veggies every day, but it is still good to have it their for him just in case.

I have recently become a member of an online beardie forum that I just cannot extend how wonderful and informative they are!! www.beardeddragon.org - go their and become a member!! I have learned more in two days from the site and the people on it then I have from working at petco for 3 years!! They have articles, caresheets, and discussions of all kinds!! Hope to see you thier!!

  2. UVB on Screen = Bad

If You Got A Kit Chances Are Your Beardie Could Die Within A Couple Weeks,

Many of the Pet Store Branded Substrates are hazardous to your Beardie wether you work at a pet store or not its a fact.

Your Bulbs may be coils and lettuce is recommended as food although small amounts being mixed in with other greens is generally allowed. 6 inches is the required distance for UVB.

If you want to save yourself some money you should get the 40g Tank right from the start as a 20g is just wasted money since your Bearded Dragon will surely require a 40g in several months as they grow fast.

You should dust your insects and or veggies once a week with a multi vitamin. A better Nutritional Caresheet can be found at http://www.bearded-dragons.ca/nutrition....

  3. Well i have tank with a mess top and i have my UVB on that. Iv had him since he was a baby and hes over a year old, and he healthy and fine. You feeding him he right veggies :) you can also feed him dandelion leafs out ur garden, make sure u wash them all properly. MBD is where they don't get enough calcium and UVB. If hes a baby then dust his crickets every time u feed him, this should be everyday. When he gets to adult it shout be 4-5 time a week. you can get vitamin dust with calcium already in it. If your scared that he ain't getting enough calcium, put a shallow dish in there with calcium on it, if he needs it he will eat it (that's optional).

You should have a UVB and a basking light, if u wanted to use a heat mat at night.

Never give him iceberg lettuce! :)

    Hope this helped you

  4. The screen will cut out some of the UVB, that's true.  However, as long as it is 6-8 inches away from the basking spot you will be fine even with a screen.

High oxalates bind calcium somewhat, but not generally enough to cause MBD, don't worry.  Here is a site with a list of good staple foods and good treats for your Beardie, so you can give him a bit more variety in his diet, and it tells you info about each food to set your mind at ease:  http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.co...

Yes, you need both a multivitamin and a calcium supplement.  You can dust either the crickets or the salad with it, just make sure he gets the calcium every day and the multivitamin 5 times a week.

Oh, and I almost forgot, some of the UVB bulbs out there are junk.  You need to make sure that what you have isn't.  The UVB bulbs that prevent a Bearded Dragon from getting MBD, (and I'll only list the fluorescents, as that is what you have) are:  The Reptisun 10.0, the Reptisun 5.0, the Arcadia D3 + 12%, and the Reptiglo 8.0.  The Reptiglo 10.0 has enough UVB, but has been causing health problems.  If your UVB bulb isn't one of these (the make and model should be printed on the side of the bulb), then you need to replace it.
