I broke my Dish DVR remote. What can I do now. Do I need to call Dish Network and order a new one. Is their retail store that sell these kind of remotes I might be able to pick one up in town instead of waiting for dish network to come out here. Thanks!

  1. Universal remote do not work on DVR. your best chance is calling them for more information.

  2. for the price, its better to order a replacement from Dish , it should cost from $20 to $30, get the UHF one so you have more flexibility and specify you have a DVR . after you have your remote from dish, then get yourself a universal learning remote and program your dish functions into it. once you are done, put your Dish remote in a safe place and just use your universal. I use a Universal Remote control URC-R6, it costs about $20 at Walmart.

You could just get yourself the Universal remote but you will be missing many features that can only be programed by learning from an original remote.

  3. Or, pick up one of the Logitech Harmony remotes.  Here's how it works...

    1. Install the software that comes with the remote

    2. You write down the make & model # of everything you have.

    3. Launch the software you installed in step 1 and follow the wizard.  It asks you for the make & model of everything, and then you setup activities like "Watch TV" or "Watch a DVD", etc.

    4. Connect the remote to your computer with the USB cable that came with the remote, let the software program the remote, use the remote, be happy.

We've used the Harmony remote products for years.  Always work wonderfully, and it beats having 5 remotes laying around (TV, TiVo, AV Receiver, DVD and Apple TV).
