I am a 21 yr old guy who is fairly healthy(sligthly overweight) and i had a left sided mid shaft fibular fracture and syndesmosis disruption. the Doctor says that the outcome of this will be very "poor" whats the worst that could happen and do you know of anyone else who's has refused surgery for something similar?

  1. hope you like life without a foot

  2. I don't know of anyone who's broken their ankle and refused surgery, but I would guess it will cause a lot of problems in the future and will probably heal super huge.  I tore my ligaments and didn't follow the follow-up instructions to the T and my ankle is about an inch wider that the other one.  If its an insurance thing, I would have paid less if I didn't have insurance.  The hospital will help you out if you fill out the right forms.  They don't want to s***w you.  I've been through it.  Ask for a counselor or something at the hospital and they will walk you through the process.

  3. Why did you refuse surgery? Insurance? Afraid?

Like it was already stated, if its because of insurance, the hospital will have to work with you because this is a "needed" surgery, not a "wanted" surgery. The longer you wait, the worse your ankle will heal.

You need your ankles to walk...reconsider before its too late. You will develop and have constant pain. You will develop arthritis. You will always have severe difficulty walking. You will probably walk stiff like a robot, because you will lose the ability to move your ankle and be very, very stiff and limited in your ankle range of motion.

Because you have now changed the way you walk(this is your future continued) because of your stiff, painful & arthritic ankle, you now are having knee, hip & back pain. Do you see your future without surgery and PT after surgery?

Good luck & I hope you are able to have surgery and please, please follow-up with physical therapy after your cast comes off.
