Question:

I bruised underneath my toenail. Almost feels like I broke it? (very detailed, not for squeamish)?

I have horrible eyesight and walked into a small tree stump today. My baby toenail almost completely broke off, had to end up cutting it because it was sticking straight up. Where the toenail was is very badly bruised, red and swollen. Whenever I try to walk or move that foot in any way that puts even the slightest pressure, my eyes start watering because it hurts so bad. Should I just try icing it (though I don't think we have any) or should I tell my parents? Only problem with telling my parents is they'd insist on me going to the doctor and we don't have insurance and money's very tight right now, so I'm trying to avoid saying anything. Does it sound broken or what else could it be?

  1. You tore off that toenail, and that's why it hurts, and is bruised and swollen. If your toe does not look like its bent out of shape, then it probably won't be a fracture. Keep it clean and dry and cover it with some gauze. Some antibiotic cream might also help. Of course you still have to tell your parents. Even if its not broken, it could end up getting infected and will cost a whole lot more to fix.

  2. Your nail sounds like it came off the nail plate.  It will eventually grow out.  Toenails take 9-12 months to fully grow out.  If you go to the doctor, they would most likely send you for xrays to see if it is broken.  There is not much to do for it besides splinting it to the next toe.  I would wear an extra wide shoe.  You can buddy splint it to the next toe.  Ice and elevate the foot.  If there is redness that starts to streak up your leg I would definitely get it looked at, especially if you get any nausea, vomiting, fevers, or chills.  Hope this helps!

  3. You SHOULD see a doctor. Are there any free clinics where you live? Last thing you would want is a nasty infection. I understand that it can be pricey, but you shouldn't risk your health.
