i came home from vacation to find two tiny platys in my fish tank with my other 3 platys. and so now i'm not exactly sure what to do. i would assume that there would have probably been more than two babies? did the others get eaten?

do i separate the babies from the other fish? i have a small unfiltered tank that i used for my beta before i got my filtered tank (the beta has since died of old age and i just recently -three months ago- put the 3 platys in the 5-gallon tank). so should i put them in there? can they live in an unfiltered tank?

thanks in advance for everyones help!

  1. ok get the 2 babies out and put it in the unfiltered betta tank away from the parents and other fish they will eat them. look for more that are laying in the rocks and hidden in thr plants i tihnk there will be more unless they got eaten! they can live without a filtered tank. feed them crushed up tropical fish food or baby brine shrimp (frozen or live, i tihnk maybe live would be best) um they might die so be aware not all of them survive yuo need a plant in the tank the babies will feel secure yuo can put gravel in it but yuo can also leave it bare! change the water every 5 days if not less or a tiny more! hoped i helped!

  2. Yup platy parents will eat their bubs. Try and seperate them if you can. Unfiltered tank will just need a lot of water changes to keep the water healthy.

  3. a simple and cheap solution is something called a net breeder - this is a mesh enclosure that you can immerse in a rectangular aquarium (it hooks onto the lip). It keeps the fry safe from the big guys and gals. A link to one of the many models of net breeders is listed below.

  4. i would place them in a small critter carrier inside the 5 gallon tank so the other fish cant get to them
